Complex With Supermarket Would Be A First In New Square

The village of New Square could have it's first full-service supermarket if an application to build a 30,000-square-foot structure gets the green light from the state, according to lohud.com.

Dubbed the Heritage Park Industrial Complex, the $6 million project would include a supermarket, a poultry packaging facility, and offices in a two-story building located at 20 Mezritch Road. The supermarket would be located on the ground floor--which will be 15,000 square feet--with the offices above, according to the report.

Until this point residents have relied on a number of smaller stores to meet their grocery needs, lohud.com reported.

The project is set to receive funding from the state: $1.6 million from Empire State Development under the Restore New York Communities program; $600,000 from ESD's Regional Council Capital Fund; and a community development block grant in the amount of $750,000, lohud.com reported.

Community Improvement Council, a not-for-profit, owns the property, and Hatzlacha Supermarkets would handle the packaging and distribution part of the operation, as well as the supermarket. Meanwhile Chesed/Share of New Square, a charitable organization, would lease the offices on the building's second floor. Absent from the application is a chicken slaughtering component, something included in previous proposals, lohud.com reported.

However, approval is still required from the Public Authorities Control Board, according to ESD spokesman Jonah Bruno, who told lohud.com the project would "restore and revitalize" a vacant property and encourage economic development.

County Executive Ed Day observed that the proposal bears similarities to a previous application on Rovitz Place. He added that the application will be looked at to ensure residents inside and outside the village "are not compromised," lohud.com reported.
