O&R Workers Helping Turn The Light Back On In North Carolina

Members of the IBEW Local 503 from Orange & Rockland Utilities, Inc., have traveled to North Carolina to join the effort to restore power to those affected by Hurricane Matthew, according to a statement from the union.

The storm, the strongest in the Atlantic Ocean in almost a decade, killed more than two dozen people in North Carolina and knocked out power to more than 650,000 customers in the state, according to The New York Times.

The storm, which last week struck Haiti, the Bahamas, Cuba and elsewhere in the region as a Category 4 Hurricane, was responsible for billions in damage and claimed more than 1,000, according to media reports, which emphasized that efforts to determine the full loss of life are ongoing and only estimates at this time.

"When these natural disasters hit our country it is so important that we all come together to help each other," said the union's statement. "We are so proud that IBEW 503 is representing the Hudson Valley in its efforts to help those in most need right now."
