SUFFERN, N.Y. -- A client-centered approach to fitness is one in which clients learn what their trainers know. It is the foundation for Movement 4 Life in Suffern, a company that, according to its president Alex Chemerov, is built on education.

"It is our goal to continue to grow as students of human movement and, more importantly, to deliver this information to our clients; making you all the smartest training clients around," he told Daily Voice in a recent interview.

"We will explain and educate you on the rationale for our program design, as this is the basis that will ultimately lead to your success. We feel education is the key component in creating a true transformation, one that lasts a lifetime.

In the Q&A exchange with  Chemerov, he expanded on his company's training philosophy: "We believe in training movements, not muscles," among other topics.

What's different about your program?

By integrating the body, we are able to tap into how the body was designed to move. The world we live in is three-dimensional, and our body was designed to move in all three anatomical planes (sagittal, frontal and transverse).

Not only are our bodies capable of moving multidimensionally, but so are all of our muscles and joints. We utilize this philosophy with every client we work with, from our very first assessment all the way through our most advanced client.

We systematically use this methodology in all of our training programs.

Can you describe the clientele and goals that seem to be a trend among customers?

Our current clients are looking for more than just a workout that they can get in any gym. Any trainer can make anyone breathe hard and sweat. Our M4L client is looking for a more intimate environment where they can learn and be coached into better health.

We find that this empowers and motivates our clients to be able to apply what they learn from us to all aspects of their lives. Many have a goal of wanting to look better.

Our clients also want to feel and perform better in life and in sport.

What are the benefits/disadvantages of other types of workouts?

In addition to how we integrate the body and move it through each plane of motion, we also train it in an environment that is authentic to life.

By acknowledging undeniable truths like gravity, ground reaction forces and momentum, we can manipulate each and every exercise to set up our clients for success with endless variations.

Once we understand the demands of our clients' needs and wants, we can customize a program that will enhance their movement vocabulary.

Movement is very much like language. If we can improve our building blocks (grammar, vocabulary, etc.) necessary to communicate, we can become better at speaking and communicating.

If we have a deeper desire to speak better, by taking our studies even further, we can become even more eloquent and articulate with our use of words that can set us apart from others.

Movement is very much the same way. We have all seen that expert athlete move with grace, power and efficiency that makes it look so effortless.

There are ways to train that will enhance how someone moves, which results in a body that looks, feels and performs better.
