ROCKLAND COUNTY, N.Y. -- Cinco de Mayo, otherwise known as May 5, tends to be less about the commemoration of the Mexican army's victory over the French forces of Napoleon III, and more about the killer drinks and party atmosphere celebrated at area bars.

What is meant to honor the Battle of the Puebla on May 5, 1862 has turned into an ode to tasty tacos, massive margaritas and mariachi magic. A sampling of spots to celebrate the holiday follows, though feel free to let us know any we've missed.

Casa Del Sol (104 Main St., Nyack, 845-353-9846): Expect giveaways all night as well as live music from Curbside Hustle starting around 9:30 p.m.

Cinco de Mayo (44 Route 303, Valley Cottage, 845-535-3321) : Obviously a place called Cinco de Mayo does it up right come May 5. Expect a mariachi band from 6 p.m. to l0 p.m. with a DJ from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. There will also be a special menu, lots of souvenirs, drink specials and tequila shots.

Olé Olé (100 Orange Ave, Suffern, 845-368-3058): Margaritas plus Spanish, Mexican and Latin dishes -- think lots of tapas -- make this a lively spot for enjoying the very best this holiday has to offer.

Union Restaurant & Bar Latino, (22-24 New Main St., Haverstraw, 845-429-4354): There’s no better way to celebrate America's favorite Mexican holiday than indulging in chips, guac, tacos and tequila. Union takes it up a notch with inventive food and drink specials.
