As a volunteer for nearly half a century, Granirer has saved more than 1,000 acres of parkland from being developed, according to County Executive Ed Day.
In a ceremony Friday at Kennedy Dells Park, Day presented the 83-year-old environmental activist and attorney with an award naming him as the county’s Outstanding Environmental Volunteer for 2016.
Granirer is a member of the nonprofit group, West Branch Conservation Association, which protects open space, waterways, biodiversity and historic places.
Among the places the land trust has helped is the 93-acre Davenport Preserve in Clarkstown.
A tree was also planted in Granirer’s honor in the county park off Zukor Road in New City.
