Greenburgh Cleans Up Crane's Pond; Town Hall's Lagoon May Be Next

EDGEMONT, N.Y. – Crane’s Pond no longer resembles a big bowl of pea soup, says Greenburgh supervisor Paul Feiner.

Crane's Pond in Greenburgh is nice and clear again after being treated for an algae bloom that made it look like pea soup. The town made tackle the green lagoon at Town Hall next.

After getting a lot of complaints about the amount of algae growth at the pond, the town bought in an aquatic specialist from The Pond and Lake Connections.

The pond was treated with chemicals and its water flow was improved by the installation of a second aerating fountain, Feiner said.

The supervisor said that the town will continue to monitor the pond.

It is hoping not to have undertake an “expensive” dredging project, he added.

The pond right in front of Town Hall on Hillside Avenue is also looking pretty gross – algae wise, Feiner said.

He said he plans to ask the parks commissioner to appropriate funds in next year's budget to treat the pond “so it will be more presentable.”

It costs about $4,000 a year to treat a pond, Feinder said.

Treatment also has to be approved by the state Department of Environmental Conservation, he said.
