SUFFERN, N.Y. - A real life yellow brick road hides just beneath the surface and begins in downtown Suffern, though it doesn’t lead to the Emerald City. The Suffern to Bear Mountain Trail, known for its bright yellow trail markers, blazes through innumerable mountains and nadirs during the length of its 23 mile journey. The trail’s convenient location on both ends of Harriman and Bear Mountain state parks makes it a popular excursion for local adventurers and New York City residents alike. (It begins in Suffern and ends at the visitor center on Hessian Lake in Bear Mountain.) The trail h…

SUFFERN, N.Y.- "America’s Got Talent" breakout star and Suffern resident Grace VanderWaal, 12, rocked the roof off of the historic Lafayette Theatre this past Saturday in front of nearly 1,000 fans. The event Saturday evening showed the abundance of love and support for VanderWaal within the Rockland community and beyond. Many of those who attended were from out of state, and a particularly avid fan of hers even came from Australia. VanderWaal’s growing following began with her remarkable audition on AGT back in June during which she performed her original song, “I Don’t Know My N…

Mia's Kitchen in Suffern Thinks Outside the Box
SUFFERN, N.Y. - Downtown Suffern’s Mia’s Kitchen has been on a mission to bring “fresh, healthy, and great tasting food to the community” since it was founded in June of 2014. Suffern residents Michael Narciso and Cynthia Gray started the family owned, health conscious lunch spot, Mia’s Kitchen, after Narciso took it upon himself to fulfill what he considered to be a pertinent need in the village. “I was walking my kids every day in town when I realized there was no place to get a sandwich anywhere,” recalled Narciso. Although Narciso's kernel of an idea was essential, it lacked ambition. …

Suffern Poetry Team On Its Way To National Competition
SUFFERN, N.Y.- Thanks to the efforts of the hardworking poets at Suffern Poetry, Rockland County will be represented in this year’s National Poetry Slam Competition for the 4th year in a row. While poetry is thought of by some as an antiquated form of expression, forced into obsolescence by the glittering digital extravagance of the 21st century, what many don’t know is that it’s more alive today than ever. Bryan Roessel, a Tuxedo High School science teacher and an avid poet, is a living testament to this fact. Roessel started Suffern Poetry and the Suffern Slam Society back in 2011 aft…

Ramapo Police Officer Serves Fresh Fare At Gateway Gourmet
MAHWAH, N.J. — Gateway Gourmet has been in Mahwah for only two months, but it's already dishing out quality food while fostering genuine friendships with numerous local regulars. One of the Deli’s founders, Robert Lancia, a Ramapo police officer since 1993 and a Suffern native, credits it all to their food’s home-made style. “We make everything that we have and everything we make… it’s made fresh,” he said. Gateway Gourmet, named after the “Gateway” Plaza in which it’s located, was founded by Lancia two months ago with the help of his wife Lisa and his childhood friend Michael Portaro. R…

A Squirtle, for those who haven't yet caught the Nintendo game bug, is a light blue Pokémon with turtle features. The app accesses the user’s camera on their smart device to view hundreds of Pokémon, digitally imposed onto the user’s environment, from up 40 meters away. The goal, of course, is to Catch ‘Em All! Ever since Silicon Valley based tech-startup Niantic, Inc. released Pokémon…

Rockland Ice Cream Truck Delivers Smiles, Sweets
NEW CITY, N.Y. -- According to John Monahan, there are few things that light up a 45-year-old mother or father of four the same way it lights up each one of their children. And that, he says, is ice cream. The New City resident should know. After years working for his father in the luxury limousine business, he started SweetGuy Ice Cream Truck in 2011. Now, the entrepreneur who grew up in Blauvelt, spends Memorial Day through Labor Day driving through the southern part of the county from noon to 9 p.m. each day, weather permitting. The idea of making ice cream dreams come true occurred by …

Nyack Fireworks Boost Local Economy
NYACK, N.Y. -- A crowd of approximately 20 families gathered on the dock at the end of Main Street, Nyack for their fix of fireworks this past Monday night to commemorate Independence Day, and they certainly weren’t alone. Anywhere in Nyack with a clear view of the southeast sky, people gathered to enjoy the show. This included Memorial Park, numerous docks on the Hudson, and even, for Nyack’s more ambitious Independence enthusiasts, the top of Hook Mountain. What's more, at least six other fireworks shows where visible while looking down and across the Hudson River during the event. All i…
