“We're awarding a bid to a contractor who will construct a new sidewalk on Fort Hill Road from Ardsley Road heading south toward Jackson Avenue but stopping at Highpoint,” Feiner said, adding that the work, if approved, will be completed this fall. “This is the first of three bids the town board will be approving within the next few weeks dealing with sidewalks.”

Additional work, the supervisor said, will include projects at Seely Place and on Sprain Road, Feiner said, noting that the Seely Place work will make walking to the the Seely school easier while the Sprain Road sidewalk project will connect to Arsdley Middle School

The supervisor said that the Fort Hill Road project will allow children and parents to walk to the Greenville school.

The sidewalks, Feiner said, will be paid for from the town’s capital construction budget.

The projects follow three miles of new sidewalks that were installed around Greenburgh in 2015, Feiner said, adding that most of the funding for those projects came from developers who were required to build sidewalks near new properties.

In 2016, Feiner said, the town will continue with sidewalk projects.

Feiner said the town received a Community Development Block Grant to build a sidewalk on Secor Road in Hartsdale earlier this year and that the project was built from a housing authority site to Saw Mill River Road.

"The members of the town board are determined to make Greenburgh a more pedestrian-friendly community." Feiner said. "It is going to take years to construct all the sidewalks we need. Next year, we anticipate constructing a new sidewalk on Juniper Hill connecting to the Lee Jackson school."

Feiner said state Sen. Andrea Steward Cousins has worked with the state Department of Transportation to arrange a walking tour of parts of Central Avenue that currently have no sidewalks and are near residential neighborhoods. Assemblyman Tom Abinanti also has expressed interest in bringing more sidewalks to the town.

Additional sites in need of sidewalks include the rest of Fort Hill Road, Old Colony Road, Hillside, Old Tarrytown Road and West Hartsdale Avenue from the Acme supermarket to the health center on Knollwood Road, according to Feiner, adding that Greenburgh will seek federal and state assistance for these and potentially other projects.

"We will appropriate funds in upcoming capital budgets for sidewalks and will continue to insist that sidewalks be built when new developments are constructed," Feiner said. "Sidewalks are needed. Sadly, there are more distracted drivers around and there are more cars on the roads."
