CLARKSTOWN, N.Y. – It doesn’t matter why the turtle wants to cross the road, just that drivers will let it, say Clarkstown police.
It’s that time of year when the armored slowpokes need to get to a spot to lay their eggs, police say.
In order to keep the annual maternity parade free of fatalities, they have installed electronic “turtle crossing” signs in the area of Western Highway and Piper Court in West Nyack.
The whole thing should be over by the middle of this month, police say.
Meanwhile, they are urging motorists to slow down and let the determined reptiles get where they’re going in one piece – perhaps to the “Shell” station as one wag noted on the Police Department’s Facebook page.
