The train service offered Thursday morning will represent 75 percent of ridership capacity, the MTA said.

The news will come as a relief to train riders, who endured a difficult commute Wednesday after a huge fire damaged the railroad's Park Avenue Viaduct, took two tracks into Grand Central out of service and reduced train service throughout the day.

But work crews made progress on the repairs, allowing Metro-North to bring a third track back into service and offer extra peak trains for Thursday morning while still running on a Saturday schedule, the MTA said.

Repairs are continuing to work to bring the remaining track back into service, the MTA said.

Thursday's enhanced Saturday schedule will provide commuters with additional trains during peak travel periods, the MTA said. The enhanced Saturday schedule will be in effect for Thursday on the New Haven, Hudson and Harlem Lines. Click here for the Metro-North online schedule page.

But commuters are warned to still expect delays and crowded conditions on Thursday. The MTA said commuters should work from home or find alternate travel plans if possible.

Also, customers headed for New York City are reminded that they can take a subway connection:

  • Hudson Line customers can take train service to/from Yankees-East 153rd Street with subway connections to the Lexington Ave. 4 train, D train or the 1 train at 225 St-Marble Hill Station.
  • Harlem Line customers can take train service to/from Wakefield Station with subway connections to the 2 train at 241st Street.
  • New Haven Line customers can take train service to/from Woodlawn Station with subway connections to 2 train and 5 train at 233rd Street.

NYC Transit is cross-honoring Metro-North tickets at Grand Central, Harlem-125th Street and the Bronx stations.

Metro-North's Hudson Rail Link, Haverstraw-Ossining Ferry and Newburgh-Beacon Ferry will also operate on an enhanced Saturday schedule.

Also, NJ TRANSIT is cross-honoring Hudson Line tickets on Port Jervis and Pascack Valley Line trains.

Metro-North is charging off-peak fares due to the limited service.

A massive four-alarm fire occurred at 118th Street under the railroad's Park Avenue Viaduct on Tuesday evening. Also, a string of propane tank exploded under the tracks at East 119th Street and Park Avenue.

The fire caused structural damage to one steel supporting column and three adjacent horizontal steel girders that run along the width of the underside of the viaduct, the MTA said.
