Rocklanders Cast Ballots For Dems, Republicans On Presidential Primary Day

ROCKLAND COUNTY, N.Y. -- Ellie Jordan was out early Tuesday morning voting in New York's primary, but the West Nyack resident wishes independents could vote too.

"This is an important election, a really important election, so I wish independents had a say today too," said Jordan.

Jordan did not reveal her own party affiliation but she did lament that this has been a "dysfunctional" election season so far.

Democrats and Republicans can vote Tuesday in the state’s presidential primaries, the first time in decades that New York has had competitive presidential campaigns.

Only registered voters enrolled as a Democrat or Republican can cast a ballot Tuesday. Polls are open in Rockland from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.

New York is a “closed” primary state, meaning those who aren’t enrolled in a party — independents — and those enrolled in minor parties can’t vote Tuesday.
