Southern Westchester Boces Take On Restoration Of 9/11 Mural

GREENBURGH, N.Y. -- A 9/11 mural created by Westchester County artists will be restored and maintained thanks to an initiative with Southern Westchester BOCES/Center for Career Services.

Southern Westchester BOCES has taken on a project to restore and maintain a handpainted mural at Webb Field in Greenburgh, dedicated to the victims of 9/11.

The large mural with over 1,500 individually handpainted tiles was constructed at Richard Presser Park on Central Avenue (Webb Field), but hasn't held up, likely due to changing weather conditions.

The town of Greenburgh, Fairview, Hartsdale and Greenville Fire departments have held annual 9/11 ceremonies at the wall, including a well-attended event on Sunday.

But despite work in 2011 by masons and the Greenburgh Arts Council, previously restored broken tiles once again fell off the wall.

Councilman Ken Jones came up with the idea that perhaps BOCES could make the restoration and maintenance of the 9/11 wall a school project.

BOCES in the past collaborated with the parks department restoring windows at the Hart's Brook Parks earlier this year.

Greenburgh Councilman Ken Jones and Town Supervisor Paul Feiner met with James Matera, Principal of Southern Westchester BOCES/Center for Career Services.

Matera spoke with Richard Thomas, the construction teacher and they agreed to help out and involve students in coming up with a plan to renovate the memorial.

The goal is to figure out why the bricks and wall have not held up, and what action steps are needed to preserve the wall for many more years.

Matera said his students will start their work by first coming up with a plan later this month.

As was done in the past, the town will seek private funds for the restoration.

The wall was created shortly after Sept. 11, 2001. ArtsWestchester invited artists from around Westchester County to paint tiles highlighting their feelings after 9/11.

The Rotary Clubs in the area funded the construction with assistance from Project Liberty. A historic artifact from the World Trade Center has been attached to the wall.
