Two White Horses Cross Town Borders After Leaving Area Farm

SOUTHEAST, N.Y. -- John Morton had an unusual Tuesday morning when he spent time tending to a pair of white horses that escaped from nearby Ryder Farm.

Morton told Daily Voice that his wife found the horses off of Starr Ridge Road, in the yard of a residence located around the border with North Salem. Morton added that she used her car to block the horses from leaving, and that he arrived with a rope after she called.

Unfortunately for Morton, he recalled that the horses crossed into a neighboring property and briefly wondered onto the road itself during rush hour when there were a lot of cars out.

Morton, who suspects that commotion from a passing school bus led the horses to move across yards, managed to guide them away from the road. Then, he recalled placing a rope on one of the horses to guide it while the other followed.

State police arrived at the scene in response to a call from Morton and representatives from nearby Valcor Farm came with a trailer to transport the horses.

Melissa McMorris, a state police spokesman, said that police arrived at about 7 a.m. and left at around 9:15 a.m.

Stefanie Mackin, Valcor's property manager, said that the horses were a "little bit scratched," but that their wounds were superficial. Mackin was joined at the scene by Valcor's owner, Elizabeth Leete.

Valcor Farm subsequently turned the horses over to Ryder Farm. The horses apparently got out of the farm by breaking through a gate, Mackin said.

A message left for Ryder Farm was left unanswered.
