Valley Cottage Gunsmith Is Only Game In County

VALLEY COTTAGE, N.Y. -- Recently, a debate flared up on a Facebook page with a poster wondering why in the world a gun seller opened shop alongside a Tattoo parlor and a Subway in a Route  303 strip mall.

What Daily Voice learned was this: Precision Gunsmiths LLC has occupied the narrow 500 square foot space for three years. Its owner Marty Tenebaum services guns, he does not sell them. Tenenbaum's family commercial real estate concern owns the entire shopping center.

And, that gunsmithing, is not only a dying art, but Precision Gunsmith is the only one of the kind in the county.

Mostly he cleans and fixes target and hunting rifles. A veteran of commercial real estate, Tenenbaum opened shop after repairing guns as a hobby for years.

Occasionally he's got something special to work with, like the two rifles brought to him by a doctor. Hurricane Sandy washed out the rifles, but Tenenbaum has restored them and "brought them back to life."

Two men sporting rifles came into Tenebaum's diminutive workshop, which is crammed with tools and gun parts. John Torhan needed a new firing pin for his Winchester 100 because of a recent recall.

The Stony Point man said "there is no other place I know of in the county."

Tenebaum, who graduated college in the 1970s, had hoped to become an aeronautic engineer. Jobs were thin back then. Fixing weapons is his way of finding his way back to his youthful dreams.

Speaking of youth, the gunsmith says his clientele is 50 and older.

"Today's youth seem far less interested in guns."

That, presumably, is good news to those on Facebook who were fretting over the idea of a gun seller in the nabe. Which even Tenebaum can understand.
