WEST NYACK, N.Y. -- Longtime Bronx firefighter and 9-11 hero Joseph O'Toole, 61, died Monday at home in West Nyack after a long battle with cancer.

Fondly known as "Toolie," O’Toole, worked out of FDNY 41 Truck for 19 years, and spent more than five months digging and working at the 16-acre 9/11 property, according to the Daily News.

O’Toole, who is survived by his wife  Christine, loved his brothers at the firehouse, spending time with his family including his daughters Jeannette and Elizabeth, her husband Chris, and his son Brian and his wife Kristina, along with his five grandchildren, and sailing on his boat.

He is also survived by his sisters Tricia O’Toole, Brenda Kenny and Annie Murphy and his brother, Michael O'Toole.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York or FDNY Fire Family Transport Foundation .
