NANUET, N.Y. – George Whalen, formerly of Nanuet, died Sunday, July 24. He was 85.
Born Jan.6,1931, in Yonkers, he was the son of Lester and May Whalen.
He served in the U.S. Army for six years and fought in the Korean War and attained the rank of master sergeant.
He served as president and coach of Nanuet Little League for over 15 years. As a parishioner of St. Anthony's Church, he served on the parish council, was a lecturer and a YCS leader. He also drove the parish bus, providing transportation for seniors to attend Mass, and for volunteer youth group programs.
He was the executive director of the Plumbing Foundation of New York City. He was appointed by five mayors to serve on construction advisory boards in New York City. He was also appointed as an adviser by several New York governors.
He is survived by six children, Mark (Peggy) of Warwick, N.Y., David (Marge) of Myrtle Beach, S.C., John (Rick) of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Paul of Nanuet, Jeanine (Jimmy) Blumenfeld of Nanuet, Peter (Susan) of Nanuet; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, July 27, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Joseph W. Sorce Funeral Home Inc. in West Nyack. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, July 28, at 11:30 a.m. at St. Anthony's Shrine Church in Nanuet. The Joseph W. Sorce Funeral Home Inc. 728 West Nyack Road.
