CLARKSTOWN, N.Y. -- Most people don't think about being ripped off when they are pumping iron at the gym, but according to the Clarkstown Police, gym locker rooms have become a target for thieves.
Police said that while gym members are busy working out, thieves are entering various gyms around the area for the purpose of gaining access to the locker room areas.
Once inside, they proceed to either pull or clip locks from lockers and steal wallets, purses, credit/debit cards, drivers' licenses, money, cellphones and other items, police said.
The Clarkstown Police Department has the following recommendations to help prevent gym members from becoming victims of theft:
- Do not leave wallets or purses full of credit/debit cards, cash and identification cards or cell phones, tablets and other valuables inside of lockers in the locker rooms.
- Do not leave these valuables inside of your vehicles either.
- Utilize the security lock boxes. These boxes are usually located near the front desk.
- Avoid using combination locks and padlocks with exposed shackles because they can be easily pulled. Invest in a tamper resistant padlock with a protected/shrouded shackle.
