ROCKLAND COUNTY, N.Y. -- A Congers man has been charged with attempted murder after attacking a man in Pearl River, according to the Orangetown Police Department.

James B. Sheridan, 40, was arrested after officers responded to a report of a possible fight on Central Avenue in Pearl River, police said.

When officers arrived, they found Sheridan beating another man, who had suffered numerous serious injuries and a weapon was recovered nearby, police said.

Sheridan was arrested at the scene and charged with attempted murder, and two counts of assault.

The victim was transported to Nyack Hospital for treatment, police said.

Sheridan is free on $75,000 bail.
