A driver told police officers responding to a one-vehicle crash that took out a telephone pole on Route 17 in Sloatsburg that he fell asleep behind the wheel.

The crash, which occurred Thursday night, happened when the vehicle left the roadway, struck and severed the pole and came to rest back on the roadway, Ramapo Police said.

The unidentified driver was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured, police added.

The roadway was closed for a short time to clear the debris and remove the car.
