Police confirmed that at approximately 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning, contracting crews renovating the Street School Community Center on Zukor Road in New City found a grenade, which has since been removed from the site for testing.

The explosive device will be X-rayed to determine if it is active, and will then be detonated by the Rockland County Sheriff’s Bomb Squad at a safe location if it is. Police said the building was evacuated after the grenade was discovered in a cabinet, though there were no seniors in that section of the community center.

Once the grenade was safely removed from the building, police conducted another sweep before letting anyone back inside.
