CONGERS, N.Y. -- An informational meeting to discuss a plan that would construct a new firehouse for the Congers Fire Department is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Lake Road Firehouse, 64 Lake Road.
The meeting comes one week before the plan's ultimate future will be determined by the people of the hamlet during a July 26 bond vote, according to the fire department.
In pushing for the new building, the fire department hopes to more than quadruple the square footage of the current firehouse, which was built in the 1930s, according to department officials.
The department pointed to what it said were several other problems of the current building as well.
The current building is in the planned evacuation zone in the event of a train incident, according to officials, who added that it also is too small for department vehicles and is heavily affected by Lake Road traffic resulting from passing trains.
The proposed firehouse would be built on Congers Fire Department property located at the corner of North Route 9W and Dr. Davies Road, according to the department.
While the new firehouse would require residents to pay an average tax increase of about $100 annually, the proposed building would be more accessible to volunteers, provide access to department volunteers regardless of the traffic from the train on Lake Road and provide room for "in-house" training and equipment maintenance, according to the fire department.
