The incident took place around 7:20 a.m. when the department received a 911 call regarding a resident "going crazy, destroying everything and hitting the kids," said Lt. J. E. Bosworth.

Spring Valley Police and medical personnel were immediately dispatched to the scene. The first officer arrived within two minutes and found the caller and other family members outside of the home, crying and yelling for help and was directed into the residence, Bosworth said.

The officer could see Artemio Gonzalez, 37, acting irrationally and violently throwing items around the kitchen. Upon noticing the officer, Gonzalez then began throwing anything in his reach at him, including pots and pans, added Bosworth.

Gonzalez then ripped the entire stove top off of the oven and threw it at the officer. All attempts by the officer to verbally de-escalate Gonzalez's violent behavior were ignored and a physical altercation ensued during which Gonzalez was able to arm himself with a knife, he explained.

While still engaged in the struggle, the officer was able to activate his emergency button on his portable radio. Gonzalez repeatedly tried to stab the officer resulting in one stab wound to the officer’s torso, police said.

When another officer arrived, he was able to disengage from the struggle and deploy his Taser allowing both officers to take Gonzalez into custody, Bosworth said.

Both of the officers and Gonzalez were treated at a local hospital and released. Gonzalez was charged with second-degree attempted murder and is being held pending arraignment.
