New York State Police troopers attempted to stop Bronx resident Angel Figueroa, 39, at approximately 1:45 a.m. on Saturday morning when he was driving on I-87 in Ulster for an equipment violation.
Police said that Figueroa failed to stop when prompted by troopers, and a pursuit was initiated. After multiple attempts to stop the vehicle, the pursuit was eventually terminated by troopers due to safety concerns.
State Police troopers continued to canvas the area for the driver, relaying all vehicle description information to adjacent police barracks. Shortly after the initial attempts to stop him, Figueroa was later tracked down by an adjoining patrol area state police trooper who spotted him parked on the shoulder of the interstate after running out of gas.
Two people were taken into custody, police said. Further investigation determined that Figueroa was driving a vehicle that had been reported stolen by the New York City Police Department. Figueroa was taken into custody and charged with a felony count of fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property and criminal possession of a controlled substance, a misdemeanor.
Figueroa was arraigned in the Town of Ulster Court and remanded to the Ulster County Jail in lieu of $50,000 cash bail or $100,000 bond. He is due back in court on Wednesday to answer the charges.
