The Nanuet Fire Department were called to the busy intersection of Middletown and West Clarkstown roads around 7:43 a.m., right in the midst of the morning rush hour.
After making sure that all the occupants of the silver sedan had gotten out safely, firefighters were in the process of hosing down the vehicle when the tank went.
They quickly switched to a foam-spraying system, which contains and puts out burning fuels.
The car owner told firefighters that the gas tank had been full.
While the fire was put out within a half hour, the incident caused some traffic and commuting delays.
Both roads were re-opened by 9 a.m., fire officials said.
According to a post on the department's website one motorist praised stopped to praised firefighters for their "dedication."
"One moment they're going about their day, and the next they're suited up and risking their lives to serve their neighbors," they said the unidentified driver told them.
Clarkstown police provided support at the scene.
No firefighters were injured.
The cause of the car fire was not known at press time.
