NANUET, N.Y. -- An elderly couple narrowly escaped with their lives as flames engulfed their Nanuet home early Friday, Clarkstown police said.
The two-story home at 45 Mesa Place was badly damaged in the blaze, which started shortly after midnight, police said.
The fire, which appears to have started on the back deck, spread to other parts of the house and caused the roof to cave in.
It was knocked down in about 40 minutes, according to a report by lohud.com.
Police said that the fire does not seem to be suspicious.
Dozens of firefighters from Nanuet, South Spring Valley, Pearl River, and West Nyack responded to the scene.
According to media reports, the house is uninhabitable, and the couple are staying with friends.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
