RYE, N.Y. -- Dozens of people escaped injury, or even death, late Friday when a motorist lost control of her car, careening onto Rye Village Green.

A Rye police officer said the unidentified driver, who is about 50 years old, was trying to back up about 5:42 p.m. when she "hit the gas instead of the brakes and lost control of the car."

The car reportedly jumped the curb on Haviland Lane before traveling onto the grassy public park -- narrowly missing numerous people, the patrol officer said.

The driver was shaken up, but no one was hurt and no tickets had been issued as of Friday evening. An investigation is continuing into the incident, police said.

The small park, off Boston Post Road (Route 1), is located in front of the Rye Free Library and adjoins Rye City Hall.

Formally known as the "Village Green," the park is a busy public thoroughfare filled with sidewalks and public benches.
