The 42-year-old driver in the westbound pickup had just cleared the crest of a hill on Washington Avenue near the Garden State Parkway overpass when his truck drifted into the lane and collided with the other truck around 7:20 a.m., Lt. Richard Skinner said.

AirMed One flew the Emerson victim to Hackensack University Medical Center with injuries that were serious but not life-threatening, Skinner said.

"It didn't appear that way at first," the lieutenant said, referring to earlier reports from the scene of a possible fatality.

The others were taken to HUMC by ambulance after township firefighters extricated them, Skinner said.

Their truck was registered out of Newark, he said.

The Bergen County Prosecutor's Fatal Accident Investigations Unit was among the responders, but township police were handling the probe. Summonses and possible charges were expected.

Also responding to the collision between Robinwood Road and Jackson Avenue were Westwood firefighters, MICOM ambulances from Holy Name Medical Center and HUMC, township and Tri-Boro ambulances and township police.

Washington Avenue between Jackson and Robinwood remained closed for investigation and removal of the wreckage.
