ROCKLAND COUNTY, N.Y. -- A social media post alleging that a couple walking in downtown Pearl River had been chased by a person with a knife quickly became a concern for residents and the police.

Orangetown said a social media post about a man with a knife led to concerns for residents afraid for their safety.

To help quell rumors associated with the post, the Orangetown police said a report was taken at 1:14 a.m., on Sunday, Sept. 24, where it was reported that a young man and woman were walking home from downtown Pearl River when they heard an individual walking behind them yelling into his cell phone.

The couple said they ran because they believed that the person on the phone was chasing them, police said.

Police were able to find the person walking behind them who told officers they were having an argument with someone on the phone and at no time meant to scare other pedestrians walking home.

Department officials said if there was a public safety concern in the Town of Orangetown or the Village of Nyack, they would issue a press release and notify residents.
