ORANGEBURG, N.Y. -- Orangetown police rescued a dog trapped inside a hot car in a parking lot on Saturday and issued the animal’s owner, a 19-year-old resident of Montvale, N.J., a summons over the incident, according to police.

Officers responded to an anonymous report of a dog locked in a vehicle in the parking lot of Lowe’s in Orangeburg on Saturday at 2:03 p.m, police report.

Police discovered a 2011 Mazda with a German shepherd puppy panting heavily inside, according to officials.

At the time, the temperature in Orangeburg was 91 degrees, with 73 percent humidity, police report.

Police located the owner of the car, identified as Shaun Stanley, and did not have to damage the vehicle to rescue the dog, according to officials.

Stanley was issued a summons for unlawful confinement of a companion animal in a motor vehicle, police report.

He is due back in Orangetown Court on Wednesday, June 22, according to officials.
