Rockland Man Arrested In Connection With Murder-For-Hire Case

MONSEY, N.Y. -- A Monsey man has been arrested in a murder-for-hire scheme in which two men were charged last week with hiring a hitman to kill a Hasidic man who refused to give his wife a religious divorce, according to multiple reports.

Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara announced last the week the arrest of two men in a murder-for-hire plot. A Monsey man has also been arrested in relation to the crime.

The FBI arrested Binyamin Gottlieb Sunday at John F. Kennedy International Airport when he was trying to leave the country, said News 12.

Shimen Liebowitz, 25, of Monroe, and Rabbi Aharon Goldberg, 55, of Bnei Brak, Israel, were charged Sept. 6 in Central Valley, while meeting to plan the kidnapping and murder, said Preet Bharara, U. S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York.

“The defendants are charged with a chilling plot to kidnap and murder the intended victim. Over a period of months, the Complaint alleges, they met repeatedly to plan the kidnapping and to pay more than $55,000 to an individual they believed would carry it out," Bharara said.

According to the FBI, Gottlieb admitted to paying a confidential informant $25,000 to help cover the cost of kidnapping and murdering the man, added News 12.

Liebowitz and Goldberg, who are being held without bond, paid the man $32,000, according to Bharara.

Sources say a fourth person is also involved, although the FBI would not confirm the allegation, said News 12.
