The charges came about when officers responded to the report of an unwanted visitor at an apartment complex on Wednesday night, according to police.

Earlier in the evening, a resident at the complex had allowed an intoxicated friend to stay over; when the friend became disruptive, keeping the family from sleeping, officers had been called to assist in removing the man from the residence, police said.

Upon the officers’ arrival, the man, whose name has not been released, willingly accepted a ride to another friend’s house, which was also in the Hillcrest area, according to police.

Shortly thereafter, however, officers were called back to the first apartment when the intoxicated man returned and tried to force his way back in, police said.

When the resident of the apartment refused his entry, the man smashed out a window in the resident’s car, according to police.

The man was observed walking from the scene by a responding officer who took him into custody, police said.

The suspect has been charged with harassment in the second degree and criminal mischief in the third degree, according to police.

The defendant was arraigned in the Town of Ramapo Justice Court, with bail set at $1,000, police said.

After posting bail, he was released with a future court date, according to police.
