CLARKSTOWN, N.Y. -- The Rockland County Sheriff's Office is mourning the loss of one of their own -- K9 Scooter -- who served with the department's Arson Unit, said Rockland County Sheriff Louis Falco III.
Scooter passed away after relatively brief illness. Scooter worked her last shift with her partner Arson Detective Douglas Lerner just a few days ago. She was being treated for an intestinal disorder but began to develop internal bleeding and the treatments were no longer effective, said Chief William Barbera.
"It was a pleasure having Scooter as part of our family and she will be missed around the building," said Falco. "Scooter was a true professional. She was happy to do her duty and worked diligently to help firefighters and detectives determine the cause and origin of fires."
Scooter joined the Rockland County Sheriff’s Office in April of 2006, with help from State Farm Insurance grant. Her main job was to sniff out accelerants at fire scenes. Scooter has responded to hundreds of fires over the past decade. She's also worked with Westchester and Orange counties and was embraced by all members of the fire service, Barbera added.
