Patrol officers in Ramapo were monitoring traffic on West Eckerson Road at approximately 8 a.m. on Tuesday morning - specifically for school bus violations - when they stopped a car that drove past the bus while its red flashing lights were activated, indicating motorists to stop.

Behind that car, police said there was a second school bus, which also ignored the red flashing lights and drove past the first bus. While stopping the car, officers motioned for the school bus driver to stop and pull over, but he ignored, instead turning left onto Zuba Lane.

Police said that officers pursued the bus driver, pulling him over on the West Eckerson Extension. The 33-year-old bus driver, from Spring Valley, was issued a ticket for overtaking a stopped bus, which was receiving passengers with its red visual signals activated.

The Ramapo Police Department said it "is very serious about enforcing school bus violations.

“It is among our top traffic enforcing priorities, with 67 citations issued for that violation so far this year.”
