David Mizrachi, 21, of Monsey, entered the convenience store at the Mahwah Gulf station on southbound Route 17 after a taxi dropped him off just before 7 p.m. Thursday, Police Chief James Batelli said.
The manager noticed him stuffing items in his pockets before Mizrachi put a bottle of water on the counter and pulled out a $100 bill to pay for it, the chief said.
The manager told police that Mizrachi argued with him when he asked about the concealed items, after which he pulled several from his pocket -- along with several wax folds of heroin.
Mizrachi then began "waving them over his head and screaming at the manager," Batelli said.
They scuffled briefly and Mizrachi grabbed the $100 and left.
The manager caught up to him in the parking lot and got socked, the chief said.
A trio of officers found Mizrachi a short time later exiting a McDonalds bathroom. He was headed for a side door when they grabbed him, Batelli said.
He was carrying the dozens of heroin folds and a hypodermic needle, he said.
Mizrachi was being held on $120,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail, charged with robbery and various drug offenses.
