The assault took place around 5 p.m. Friday when the officer responded to the store for a report of three people filling a "booster" bag with stolen merchandise, said Clarkstown Officer Peter Walker.
When officers arrived at the store, the three suspects were leaving the store. The store's loss prevention officer attempted to stop the male holding the merchandise, Walker said.
The unidentified man threw the merchandise at the store employee and ran off. He was described as a male black in his 20s, wearing a brown and green jacket and red pants with white stripes.
The other two suspects were apprehended by responding officers. The suspects, identified as Jayquan Nash, 27, and Jackie Whitehead, 24, both of Brooklyn. resisted arrest, Walker said.
At the police station, while attempting to place Whitehead in a cell, she violently struggled with officers, Walker said.
One officer was kicked in the knee by Whitehead. The officer sustained an injury and was treated and released at the Nyack Hospital Emergency Room, Walker said.
Whitehead was also treated and released at the hospital, Walker said.
The stolen merchandise was valued at $2,615 and consisted of men’s clothing.
Nash was charged with felony grand larceny, criminal possession of stolen property, and resisting arrest. Whitehead was charged felony grand larceny, felony assault, and resisting arrest.
Both are being held at the Rockland County Jail on $20,000.
Police are still searching for the third person who ran away, Walker said.
