The monument will be the first in Rockland to honor veterans of the wars in the Persian Gulf, including Iraq and and Afghanistan.

"Here in Rockland we honor all who have served our country including our World War II veterans and those who came before them, going back to the earliest days of our nation," County Executive Ed Day said. "We would not be the strong and free nation we are today without their efforts."

Day was joined by Haverstraw Supervisor Howard Phillips, Stony Point Supervisor Jim Monaghan, Jerry Donnellan, director of Rockland Veterans Services, and Rockland Sheriff Louis Falco among others .

Funding for the monument was secured by State Sen. Bill Larkin (R).

Monument designs will be handled by cadets at the United States Military Academy at West Point. Approval of the design and content will be granted by a committee made up of local veterans from those conflicts.
