Percoco is currently under federal investigation for receiving a loan on his South Salem house that would cover the majority of the mortgage from a company that had worked with the state, and receiving somewhere between $70,000 and $125,000 from two other firms with connections to the state, noted the Times.

His ties with the Cuomos date back almost 30 years to working with Mario Cuomo as a 19-year old, to becoming what Andrew Cuomo called 'my father's third son,' the Times said.

The two men bonded over their middle-class backgrounds and would frequently take fishing trips to the Hamptons, the Times noted.

Percoco is described as a "no-nonsense" person with a willingness to get things done and improve the governor's standing, reported the New York Times.

Examples include being a de facto bodyguard for Cuomo against political rivals like Zephyr Teachout and anti-fracking advocates, said the Times.

Percoco would eventually leave Cuomo's administration in January and the governor cut ties with him in April after more information about the ongoing federal investigation came to light, reported the New York Times.
