CLARKSTOWN, N.Y. – The results of a study conducted by an independent consulting agency hired to analyze the efficiency of the Clarkstown Police Department found too much overtime, too many supervisors and several other factors are costing taxpayers about $5.4 million annually, lohud.com reported.

The study, conducted by the Bonadio Group, advised cutting about 15 positions – mostly those in supervisory roles – from the department’s current roster of 162 full-time officers and 24 full-time civilian employees, according to lohud.com, which reported the cuts could be handled largely through attrition in the next few years.

The study determined the department’s 2016 budget of nearly $50 million represents about 34 percent of Clarkstown’s entire budget, according to lohud.com, which reported the department – despite enjoying a much lower crime rate – has higher levels of staffing, spending and overtime than similar-sized departments.
