Full-Day Kindergarten Comes To North Rockland

After years of climbing out from underneath a heavy debt load, the North Rockland Central School District believes it has found a way to offer something parents have been clamoring for -- full day kindergarten.

According to Superintendent Ileana Eckert, the district will offer three all-day classes under a one-year pilot program that will be funded with $350,000 Title 1 funding grants.

To come up with the funding, the district will reallocate some funding for Common Core initiatives, Eckert said.

"We have reached a place with our Common Core that we feel comfortable using some of the funding to offer a service that parents have wanted, and children have needed for quite a while," she said.

The pilot program will begin next school year and be offered at three schools from 9:07 a.m. to 3:46 p.m. at West Haverstraw Elementary School; Stony Point Elementary School, and Thiells Elementary School, she said.

A total of 66 students will be picked through a lottery to attend the classes with 22 students in each class. The students will be selected through a process that breaks down students into boy, girl, ready for kindergarten and students needing extra instruction so that all classes are balanced, Eckert said.

To take part in the lottery, students need to be enrolled in the district and parents must submit a form to enter into the lottery. Entrants will be accepted until June 23. Interested students will then be brought in for screening to see where they fall in lottery categories.

The lottery will be held on Monday, July 10 at the Central Administration Building in the all-purpose room and is open to all parents, Eckert said.

Specific school times will be:

  • 4:30 p.m. for West Haverstraw Elementary School
  • 5 p.m. for Stony Point
  • 5:30 p.m. for Thiells

Parents do not have to be present to be selected.

North Rockland is one of six districts in the entire state that does not offer full-day kindergarten and the only one in Rockland County.
