As contractors continue clearing out machinery and other structures from the new Tappan Zee Bridge construction zones, motorists can expect overnight lane closures in Rockland County beginning next week.

Beginning on Tuesday, Sept. 19, Tappan Zee Constructors will begin removing structures that were used to store the bridge’s moveable barrier machine and equipment, which is located in the median between the northbound and southbound lanes of the New York State Thruway.

Contractors will move the necessary equipment to the area during the early morning hours of Monday, Sept. 18, which will require a single northbound traffic stop at approximately 4:30 a.m., when state police troopers will hold traffic for approximately 15 minutes.

Beginning at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 19, there will be one lane closed northbound from Exit 9 to Exit 10. There will be two lanes closed an hour later and three will be shut down beginning at 11 p.m. There will also be one southbound lane closed beginning at 8 p.m.

The following day, beginning at 9 p.m. there will be one lane closed northbound from Exit 11 to the bridge. An additional lane will subsequently be closed each hour. There will also be one southbound lane closed during that time.

On Thursday, Sept. 21 and Friday, Sept. 22, there will be one northbound lane closed between Exit 9 and 10, with an additional lane being closed each hour through 11 p.m.

Each of the closures will end the following day at 6 a.m.

While the lanes are closed, contractors will be removing sections of the concrete barriers separating traffic from the inactive lanes on the old bridge, replacing the barriers with orange traffic cones that will continue during the coming weeks.

Tappan Zee Constructors is also scheduled to anchor and tension the final pair of stay cables on the eastbound main this week, with a total of 192 cables connecting the bridge’s structural steel to the 419-foot main span towers.

Foundation materials are also to be installed near the bridge’s new landing in Rockland County, which will allow crews to continue preparation for the shift in Westchester-bound traffic to the new bridge, which is scheduled to take place in the fall, at which point, traffic will consist of four lanes in each direction.
