Haverstraw Streetscape Project Pays Homage To History

HAVERSTRAW, N.Y. - It was at times an admittedly “painstaking” process but the village of Haverstraw’s streetscape program is underway.

The village has embarked on a streetscape project to revamp it’s business district. The project is expected to take 18 months and encompasses New Main Street and Main Street, from the railroad to the waterfront, and Broadway from “bank corner” to Warren Avenue, Mayor Michael Kohut explained.

“We want to encourage people to come down into Haverstraw, and learn about Haverstraw, where we are and where we’re going,” Kohut said.

Kohut explained that the project is made possible with a $2.5 million grant from the state Department of Transportation that was awarded 10 years ago.

Redeveloping the downtown area became a thought roughly 12 years ago when Ginsburg Development Companies built apartments in the southern part of the village on the waterfront.

“We decided, that as the village was growing, that we needed to give a shot in the arm to our downtown business district,” Kohut said.

In addition to newly-paved roads, the project will include street trees, street furniture, like garbage cans and benches, double-headed parking meters, balanced sidewalks, and decorative lighting. A traffic light will also be re-installed at the intersection of Broadway and Main Street, he said.

The project will also pay homage to rich brick-making history with a solitary brick strip down the sidewalks. (Over 40 brickyards were located in a four-mile stretch along the banks of the Hudson River by the late 19th century.)

“It’s going to be what people envision a historical downtown to look like,” Kohut said.
