NJ Gas Tax Increase Takes Effect After Rocklanders Get One Last Cheap Tank

RAMAPO, N.Y. -- Tuesday at 12:01 a.m. signaled the end of cheaper gas in New Jersey for New Yorkers living near the border.

The tax went up from 14.5 cents per gallon to 37.5 cents, the first increase in 20 years.

Business was steady Monday, Oct. 31, at several gas stations near the New York-New Jersey border on Route 17, with many out-of-state drivers lined up for their last tanks of cheap gas.

The increase makes New Jersey the state with the sixth-highest gas tax in the nation.

A person who went during lunch for gas at the Pilot Truck Stop in Mahwah for car and lawn mower gas, said he thought it would be chaotic, but was surprised to encounter smooth running at the gas station, he told lohud.com

Workers at gas station reportedly said half the customers in for gas were from New York, reported lohud.com
