Alzheimer's Association Seeks Participants For 'Longest Day' Fundraiser

Hudson Valley residents will be cycling, playing bridge and baking cookies – among other things – to raise money to fight a debilitating form of dementia next month.

The regional chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association said the annual event, known as The Longest Day, will be Monday, June 20, the summer solstice.

The sunrise-to-sunset event recognizes, organizers say, the “challenging journey of those living with (Alzheimer's) disease and their caregivers.”

Participants will form teams that will raise money to advance the association’s care, support and research efforts.

However, team members choose to raise money – whether it’s through team sports or creating art – is up to them, organizers said.

Team members don’t even have to be in the same place doing the same thing and the events don't have to be Monday, said event manager Lauren Voorhees.

“Anywhere teams” can be made up of friends and family scattered across the country, she said.

Voorhees’ team, “Cooking for a Cause,” will involve folks doing various things from several remote locations.

She plans to spend the day at home cooking and baking with her family, preparing for a community barbecue where attendees can make suggested donations for admission.

Voorhees said her team will release purple and white balloons at dusk in honor of Alzheimer's patients and their caregivers.
