“Unseen New York: Rare Works 1960-1980,” is a collection of photographs taken by Charles Ruppmann, according to a statement from the gallery. Ruppmann’s photos will be on display at the gallery through Jan. 22. The 26 photos were chosen from more than 3,000.
According to organizers, the photo series features a number of portraits that are “unmatched in their striking complexity, clarity, and mystery.”
Varying his photo subjects, Ruppmann attempted to capture the “dissolute and gritty, glorious and glamorous, striking and resolute” elements of the city and its people, according to organizers.
Many of the photos are shown in their original, unedited formats, complete with the grease-pencil markups of the Daily News’ editors, according to organizers, who said that others are photos of photos whose negatives were long ago lost or stolen.
Ruppmann, who has lived in Peekskill since 1980, began his career with the paper in 1960 as a copyboy and later moved up to an apprenticeship in the photo department’s darkroom. In 1967, he joined the paper’s team of 54 photographers, according to organizers.
Much of the work included in Unseen New York comes from Ruppmann’s time on the overnight shift, where he covered crime, society events, riots, fires and the beginnings of paparazzi photography, according to organizers.
Also included in Ruppmann’s collection are faces of the city’s black and LGBTQ communities, women’s rights activists, Vietnam veterans protesting the war, police responding to riots, weary subway straphangers and vendors in Spanish Harlem.
After a distinguished career, Ruppmann was the subject of the Daily News’ video and photo essay, “Charles Ruppmann: 50 Years/50 Photographs.” His work also has been featured in several retrospectives.
The Field Gallery is located in the Field Library, 4 Nelson Ave., Peekskill.
