Expected to begin in the first quarter of 2017, the partnership will impact Saturday service, which will increase by eight new bus trips from Rockland to Westchester and two extended trips to White Plains, according to a statement.
For the first time, bus service also will be offered on Sunday, according to officials, who said the Sunday scheduled ought to be the same as the newly enhanced Saturday schedule.
The TAPPAN ZEExpress bus serves seven stops on weekends in Rockland and crosses the Tappan Zee Bridge to provide a connection with Metro-North Railroad’s Hudson Line at the Tarrytown Station.
According to officials, the bus also stops at the White Plains Transportation Center bus hub, which is next near the Metro-North Harlem Line.
“As we continue to push for strategies to build train and bus ridership, we’re delighted to be able to offer more options for interconnectivity between Metro-North and TAPPAN ZEExpress,” said MTA Chairman and CEO Thomas F. Prendergast.
Rockland County Executive Ed Day said he appreciated the efforts of the MTA and welcomed the increased service.
“Rockland County commuters rely upon TAPPAN ZEExpress as a key connecting service to Metro-North’s Hudson and Harlem lines in Westchester County,” Day said. “The funding approved today will, for the first time, provide TAPPAN ZEExpress service on Sundays. This is a much-needed and vital improvement, as currently there is no other public transit option between Rockland and Westchester on Sundays.”
State Sen. William Larkin Jr., State Sen. David Carlucci, Assemblywoman Ellen Jaffee and Assemblyman Kenneth Zebrowski each spoke in favor of the move on Wednesday.
“These are smart, sensible changes that will improve the quality of life in Rockland County,” Larkin said. “I applaud the MTA and Rockland County for their work on this important issue.”
