Children, parents and grandparents spent the afternoon flying balsa airplanes; watching pilots perform aerobatic maneuvers with drones, motorized airplanes and cars; and learning the do's and don'ts of drone ownership.

Intermittently during the event, there were contests to see whose paper plane would travel the farthest, with raffle prizes provided by Hobby Town of Nanuet.

On display was an array of model airplanes, helicopters and multi-rotor aircraft, and people could test their skills on an actual radio-controlled aircraft simulator.

In addition, residents were able to sign up for a free patron membership and introductory flying Lesson at the Clarkstown Model Aerodome in West Nyack.

According to Joe Guzzo, Rockland County Radio Control Club's communications director, the club is made up of over 200 members. It is geared toward people of any age "as the love of flying and aviation can really take hold of anyone -- we have a few members who are in their early teens to some of the original founding members who are approaching 90," Guzzo said.

"It seems like the interest in the radio-control hobby has stayed the same through the years -- and with the advent of quad copters or 'drones' as everyone calls them -- has opened the doors to a new generation of fliers that will probably move toward airplanes and helicopters as they progress in the hobby," he said.

Guzzo added RCRCC is unique in that it is made up of people with varied careers -- ranging from service-sector professionals to aerospace engineers to teachers to medical professionals to pilots.

"The thread that ties us all together is our love of aviation, and we encourage and will help anyone who wants to get into this hobby," he added.
