St. Patrick's Day Paradegoers Brave Cold In Tarrytown, Sleepy Hollow

TARRYTOWN, N.Y. -- In a twist on the British WWII motivational poster that reads “Keep Calm and Carry On,” the folks who put on the annual St. Patrick’s Day parade in Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow posted the following online: “Keep Calm and Go Green.”

Considering the wind chill factor this past Sunday, perhaps they should have advised: “Keep Warm and Go Green.”

According to JoAnne Murray, owner of Allan Block Insurance Agency in Tarrytown, the frigid temperatures thinned out the crowds and kept a few groups out of the line of march, which started on Main Street in Tarrytown and ended up on Beekman Avenue in the village of Sleepy Hollow.

Murray, a member of the Tarrytowns Rotary Club, was probably the warmest person there.

She was rocking a head-to-toe fuzzy, yellow duck suit to help promote the club’s popular Rubber Duck Derby held in Patriot’s Park each spring.

But, Murray said, folks didn’t let the weather spoil their good time; they just bundled up or found their own ways of keeping warm.

“Some of the students weren’t really dressed for it. They were jumping up and down and hugging themselves,” Murray said.

Among the groups braving the cold were the Tappan Zee Bridgemen, the Portuguese American Citizens Club, and the Tarrytown Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Murray said.

Leading the way was Grand Marshal Kelly Murphy, who was sworn in last year as Tarrytown’s first female fire chief.

“That was neat, that she was recognized in that way,” Murray said, adding, “She’s a really special lady.”
