The troop became aware of the need for a cleanup of trash left behind by visitors to the area via local resident Marilyn Piscitelli, said Troop 21 Scoutmaster Wayne Kunow.
"To get to Pine Meadow is about a 4-mile hike. (We) worked with Marylin Piscitelli, who coordinated the cleanup. (Piscitelli) is also a trail conference member and is very conservation-minded. We joined Marylin on two hikes removing garbage from Pine Meadow," he told Daily Voice.
The initiative is in line with many different Eagle projects troop members undertake in the area, Kunow said.
These projects range from a barbecue pit and front entrance beautification at the Suffern American Legion post to an animal shelter in the region and a bridge in Sterling Forest. Good Samaritan Hospital and Jawonio in New City have also received the troop's help in the past.
The troop belongs to the NYNJ Trail Conference, and the Long Swamp Trail is where a 60-foot bridge over a stream was built as an Eagle initiative.
"We have several maintenance hikes on the trail each year, ensuring the trail is clear from any blockage, garbage is picked up and we even remove (invasive plants)," Kunow said.
The Pine Meadow Lake effort was done in two phases.
The first group included three Boy Scouts, an assistant scoutmaster and a parent, and two Scouts and an assistant scoutmaster made the second trip.
