NEW CITY, N.Y. -- Rockland County Executive Ed Day will present the 2016 Buffalo Soldier Award to a local veteran during a special ceremony in New City.

The event will take place Thursday, Feb. 4, at 10 a.m. at the Office of the County Executive, 11 New Hempstead Road, New City.

The Buffalo Soldier Award is presented annually to an outstanding African-American veteran who resides in Rockland County. 

"Buffalo Soldier" is the nickname first given to members of African-American cavalry regiments of the U.S. Army who served in the western United States from 1867-96, noted for their courage and discipline. 

Rockland County Veterans Service Agency Director Jerry Donnellan will also be at the event.
