The Newburgh Waste Water Treatment Plant issued its latest alert on Tuesday, when tens of thousands of untreated sewage and stormwater was spilled into the Hudson River near North Montgomery Street in the city, potentially impacting the nearby boat launch area.
The discharge was first reported at approximately 4 a.m. on Tuesday morning, with an estimated 500 gallons per minute being spilled into the river. Officials cited the weather conditions, which caused an overflow through nearby drains. In an effort to combat the discharge, officials permitted a combined sewer overflow. As of 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning, the discharges were still being reported.
Last month, hundreds of thousands of gallons of untreated waste were spilled into the Hudson River in the Hudson Valley over the course of several, following the thunderstorms that struck the region. Similar discharges were also reported overnight in Rockland County.
